Visit Guernsey

Helping the island of Guernsey showcase what it has to offer.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

One of the more visual projects that I led the design on. Visit Guernsey was one of those fun projects where you could work with stunning photography and could really use them to sell the island. The websites aim was to drive traffic to local businesses by surfacing them to potential visitors who were either researching the destination or planning their trip to Guernsey. I worked with our UX researcher and created user flows for the different personas, responsive wireframes for every template and then, once signed off, striking UI design. This was a hugely successful project and when launched saw 49% growth in visits, massive growth in referrals with the first two months of the new site representing 38% of the total figure for the previous year, and a 48% increase in page views.

Everton F.C

Leading the design of the Everton website for over 10 years.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

SOCIAL CAMPAIGN

FRONTEND DEVELOPMENT

I led the design of the Everton website for over 10 years looking after design for the official website, mobile app and overseeing all design of 3rd party microsites to ensure Everton's whole digital product was on brand and consistent. I worked on numerous high profile projects year on year from new kit reveals, season ticket campaigns, live pre-season subscription websites and complete website redesigns and rebuilds. The Everton project was very intense one with a lot of tight turnarounds and last minute requests due to the nature of football, but it did offer a very varied set of projects from frequent website or social banner requests, email newsletters, campaign microsites for season tickets and kit reveals, Christmas campaigns that involved illustrations, animation and creating games, to designing highly complex sections such as a match centre with minute by minute updates and Opta stats and online pre-season subscription websites which involved numerous complex flows for purchasing and viewing games online. The last official website redesign I oversaw was Evertons first fully responsive website and led to a 39% visitor increase since launch, mobile visit share up 34% and tablet visit share up by 24%, along with a 26% increase in retail visits from evertonfc.com

Liverpool FC online store

Designing the first responsive E-Commerce website in world Football.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

My role was to lead the design on, initially the pitch visuals that were presented to LFC, and then actual website when we won the tender. I worked closely with LFC’s in-house team, to design a new online retail store that stood toe-to-toe with the world's best ecommerce experiences. With 40% of users visiting via mobile or tablet the new website needed to be responsive to cater for these users and actually became the first responsive e-commerce store in world football and introduced a click-and-collect service which was a first for the club. Upon launch the site generated a 37% increase in conversions.

BRANDING

As I started getting back into Illustration, I began to get more and more comments from friends and family about selling my work on platforms such as Etsy. This became reality when my wife 'blackmailed' me with the ultimatum that if I wanted a new computer then I must open an Etsy shop. With that all set up, now all I needed was a brand!

Chester Racecourse

Delivering a much-needed modern and user-friendly website for England’s most historic racecourse.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

I was tasked with redesigning the official website for the Chester Racecourse. Their existing site did an ok job but did nothing to showcase what an actual race day experience felt like and what options visitors had when attending a race day. Chester also wanted the website to attract potential new visitors and event planners, whether personal events or corporate, so these formed the key journeys we had to cater for. The homepage I designed, focused on initially selling Chester by way of a video hero. I wanted the video to be an abstract view of a race day, visitors enjoying themselves, enjoying the races and hospitality, showing close up footage of horse racers and live action of horses crossing the finish line, footage that really gave users a feel of the atmosphere and energy of a race day. Calls to action to book online were prominently visible in the header to cater for the key journey of booking tickets. As the user scrolled down, the prime focus was on surfacing helpful content for the main journeys in a clear and simple way and pushing those users through these flows to either book or enquire depending on their need. Once launched sessions increased by 40% year-on-year, transactions rose by 109% with a 49% conversion rate increase, and revenue grew by 121%

Visit Guernsey - Make memories

Inspiring and guiding potential visitors as they explore and plan their perfect getaway to Guernsey.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

SOCIAL CAMPAIGN

'Make great memories' was a social marketing project we came up with for Visit Guernsey. I led the design from both a UX and UI point of view. The microsite allowed users to enter their holiday or getaway criteria and then we surfaced activities, accommodation, and food and drink venues visually that met their requirements. The social aspect was that once finished, the user could download items they had favourited or share them with friends and family via email or social platforms. The campaign was a great success with a large number of visitors downloading and sharing their favourites. This led us to look into updating the main website to resuse similar functionality for searching for a place to stay or things to do on the island.

Revolution Vodka Bars

Responsible for leading design and frontend development, with the occasional perk of complimentary vodka.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

FRONTEND DEVELOPMENT

I was the lead designer and frontend developer on Revolution for around 6 years. In that time I worked very closely with Rev on projects ranging from the introduction of an advanced party booking system, new menus launches, student and Christmas campaigns, to creating a social competition where people could submit their choice for a new Revolution vodka flavour, and get their friends to vote for it for the chance of winning prizes. This client was one of our most active, so similar to Everton, we had an ongoing retainer where I managed the day to day communication and project planning with the client and handled the costing and allocation of work to be done. The site was widely recognized and nominated at The Daily Telegraph's business awards. And achieved a 98% year-on-year increase in revenues and 145% year-on-year increase in bookings.

Liverpool F.C Store

Having some fun creating L.F.C related concept designs.

PROTOTYPING

This was a fun concept I did in my spare time. E-commerce sites have all become very templated, so I enjoyed creating a more visual approach to some L.F.C. product pages. I made the product itself the main feature of the layouts and arranged the content around it to create striking cohesive template designs. I made this all into a prototype to bring the concept to life.

Neymar Jr's Five

Designing website & social campaign concepts to promote the worldwide Red Bull Football competition.

PITCH WORK

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

SOCIAL CAMPAIGN

This was another fun pitch project. Neymar Jr's Five was a world wide 5-a-side competition being run by Red Bull and team could enter. The winners from each country joined a final tournament to become world champions. For the pitch, I designed two highly visual homepages, one to promote the tournament before it went live and another for when it was live, but it was a social campaign I was most proud of. The campaign I came up with was a spin on traditional fantasy football, but because users would have no idea about the players I decided that the user would be given a 5-a-side fantasy team picked at random from everyone competing. This would lead to users following players and teams and in turn getting invested in the whole tournament. We were shortlisted down to the last two in the tender process but unfortunately lost out as we focused on the wrong screens. Red Bull felt if we had focused on the social campaign and created more designs to flesh the idea out more, then the result may of been different.

Visit Fiji

Having fun creating advertising concepts with beautiful imagery.

PITCH WORK

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

ADVERTISING

Visit Fiji was a simple marketing project. I was tasked with initially creating a number of concept adverts aligned to a strapline brainstormed by one of my marketing colleagues. With the strapline being focused around holidaymakers having so much fun they forget certain hotel amenities, I used impactful imagery of guests having fun or being active to get the message across. I got creative with the layout of typography to add fun to the adverts and came up with the style of font used on the adverts to help create the right look and feel. To complete this campaign, I mocked up a quick concept for the landing page all the adverts would link to, where visitors could find out more info about visiting Fiji, how to book their visit, and where to stay.

Sunderland A.F.C.

Concept work for Sunderland A.F.C that actually became the starting blocks for the Playmaker Platform.

PITCH WORK

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

This project was to create pitch visuals for Sunderland A.F.C. and to plan how to present them to the club. The brief was around improving the official website to make it more customisable and to improve the match centre experience for fans. I came up with a homepage concept that would allow Sunderland to promote key content such as Latest News, Fixtures & Results, Videos, Player Profiles, and a product carousel for the Online Shop, but also give the club the functionality to reorder or turn off certain content depending on their current importance during the year. The match centre concept showcased a richer matchday experience covering pre, during and post-match content all in one section. The live match itself was full of interesting content from live stats, around-the-ground scores, and social feeds, to interacting with the matchday commentator and match-related polls and betting odds. Unfortunately, although the club loved the concepts and had a long conversation with us about them straight after the pitch, we lost out on the job due to the clubs budget. The designs however, went on to become the starting point for the Playmaker platform.

Go Ahead

Leading the concept work for a sector I knew little about…

PITCH WORK

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

One of the hardest pitch designs i've worked on to date. At the time i'd never really got the train or bought train tickets. So before I could design anything, I had to do a big piece of research to understand what users needed and expected on a train website. I did a lot of competitor analysis, talked to colleagues who commuted by train, and then proceeded to create concepts we could pitch to the prospective client. Initially, this started as wireframes which I then branded using the London Midland brand whilst a colleague did the same for another of Go Ahead's train brands. We ended up getting shortlisted down to the last two agencies, but unfortunately lost out to an agency with more history in the train sector.

LOGO DESIGN

BRANDING

Originally, this was a predictor game I wireframed in my sparetime for the Playmaker project, but the project got sidelined for other features and wasn't revisited. Instead of wasting the wireframes, I decided to turn it into a personal project. Firstly I came up with a name for the game and then started work on creating a logo and brand. Once the branding was ready, I skinned the wireframes into full hi-fidelity designs and am in the process of finishing the UI for all templates. I'd love to turn this into an official app!

Reading Room Showreel

Creating short turnaround showreels promoting key agency work

CREATIVE DIRECTION

Motion graphics

Animation

Rippleffect, The design agency i worked for, was bought and merged with another agency called Reading Room. Both companies had differing visions and ways of working. As both teams navigated the merger, design seemed to be taking a back seat from an importance point of view. So I was tasked to create in 2 days a showreel that promoted the big design highlights from both agencies. This showreel was to be shown to colleagues at a workshop in both agency offices in Liverpool and London with the Liverpool one presented by myself. The feedback was very positive with colleagues who I hadn't been introduced to yet, reaching out to provide immensely positive comments. Off the back of this showreel, I worked on an extended version solely focused on Playmaker, but was unable to finish it before I left the company.

UI DESIGN

This project was a straightforward UI redesign for a friend. The brief was to take the current designs and improve the UI to create a more modern and fresh website. Apart from the logo, there was nothing from a branding point of view, so I came up with new colours, font and angled styling to give the website a modern and energetic look and feel.

Creating a fictitious character, and bringing him to life through an interactive, time-based website.

Illustration

My last semester University project involved creating and illustrating a fictitious character and building a time based interactive website allowing people to explore his life. I coded the website in Macromedia Director (Showing my age) to check the users clock and then change the website to morning, afternoon or evening. Depending on the time the user would have access to different interactive elements such as shaving his beard in the morning, watching him at work in afternoon and either hoverboarding or dancing in the evening. The website was submitted to a Create Online magazine competition and ended up being shortlisted down to the last 10 from over 250 international submissions

Lexus concept

Improving the search for a pre-owned Lexus

PERSONAL WORK

CREATIVE DIRECTION

UX/UI DESIGN

This was a personal project that I set myself. I have used the pre-owned search on the live Lexus website a number of times over the years and have always been left frustrated with the experience. The existing interface lacked user-friendly features, and navigating through the options felt cumbersome. To address these issues and enhance the user experience, I came up with simple personas and key flows to help revamp the pre-owned search functionality.
